Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterised by muscle pain, tender spots throughout the body and a number of other symptoms including fatigue, headaches, brain fog, difficulty sleeping, and for women, painful menstruation.
The current criteria for a diagnosis are that a patient must have experienced pain in all four quadrants of the body for a minimum of three months. Unfortunately, this syndrome is more prevalent among women and is associated with several other conditions. So in addition to Fibromyalgia, a patient may have two or more from a list including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ), Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and for women, Endometriosis, Interstitial Cystitis, and Vulvodynia (chronic discomfort and pain in the Vulva with no identifiable cause).
With an estimated one in twenty Australians suffering from this syndrome it is unsurprising that patients with Fibromyalgia often seek help from the team at Eastland Family Chiropractic after being diagnosed – as the condition is often made worse by herniated discs, spinal stenosis and arthritis. Whether you have already received a diagnosis or you are unsure, please call our practice now on 03 9095 7990 to arrange an appointment to discuss the treatment alternatives and options available to you.
What Causes Fibromyalgia?
Although no specific cause for Fibromyalgia has been identified the syndrome has been linked to several things, including a previous traumatic event, other illness or disease (notably, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus or Ankylosing Spondylitis) and repetitive injuries. There is strong medical opinion that a genetic element may be involved as there is a strong likelihood that a sufferer may have a family member who also has the problem.
How Can Chiropractic Help?
Patients with Fibromyalgia have a number of treatment options and alternatives available to them. Physicians may prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines to help manage the pain, muscle relaxant medicines and sleeping tablets to help patients to get a better night’s sleep.
However, these medicines are not without side effects and patients are increasingly exploring their alternatives, including the low risk option of Chiropractic Care, which, at Eastlands Family Chiropractic, also includes Nutritional Biochemistry (incorporating the study of health, diet and nutrition) as many patients have found herbs and supplements beneficial.
Chiropractic offers relief from some of the causes of pain in Fibromyalgia. Patients may be suffering from back and neck pain and painful leg and foot cramps. These problems often have a biomechanical cause that can be resolved by gentle Chiropractic adjustments. For example, many patients suffer from Upper Cervical Spinal dysfunction. Using Chiropractic adjustments of the head and neck this can be released, relieving the pain.
In addition to correcting spinal misalignments, Chiropractic soft tissue work can assist in decreasing the painful pressure points that sufferers experience throughout the body.
By getting relief from pain after Chiropractic adjustments, many patients who experience poor quality of sleep due to the pain from Fibromyalgia find that they can enjoy deeper sleep, remain asleep for longer and wake more refreshed. Getting a better night’s sleep can also help to manage the brain fog ‘fibro-fog’ that many sufferers experience.
Chiropractic is not a one-stop solution for Fibromyalgia, however, used in conjunction with some dietary modifications, beneficial herbs, supplements and exercises which your Chiropractor will be able to advise on, in tandem with Physician-prescribed medications and sometimes, cognitive behavioural therapy, significant improvements in quality of life may be achieved.
As with every condition treated by Chiropractors, there is no ‘one size fits all regimen’ for Fibromyalgia sufferers, a treatment plan, tailored to the individual needs of each patient will be agreed after an initial consultation and assessment. By working with their Chiropractor, many patients feel empowered, more in control of their treatment – and more optimistic about their future.Leave a reply →
